A note from Mr. Rebman
Picture taken during Mt. Rainier climb- July 2012.
Last summer I had the privilege of making a trip to the state of Washington. This trip was fifteen years in the making and was the fulfillment of a promise that two friends made when life took them different ways. Fifteen years ago, my friend James and I made a promise to one day climb the hardest mountain in the lower 48 states together. The plan was set, we would meet and climb Mt. Rainier. Last July, James, myself, and a firefighter from Virginia took on the challenge of summiting Mt. Rainier via the Kautz glacier. It was an amazing trip, one full of high adventure and grueling effort. On July 25th, the picture above was taken as we dug in at 13,000 feet. Later that day we summited the 14,410 ft mountain and climbed back down to this bivy site to ride out the frigid night wind. It was no easy hike. In fact, many obstacles, hazards, fear, and pain had to be overcome. All the while, my mind couldn't help but think about how my mountaineering experience mirrored life. At the same time I thought about how beneficial it might be to bring my experiences into the classroom to challenge students when it comes to school and life choices.
I am proud to be a part of the Lake Linden-Hubbell staff and honored to be the teacher of so many wonderful children. I hope to challenge my students to set reachable but challenging goals this school year. Along the "climb" through the 2012-2013 school year, I am confident that many 5th graders will reach the summit of their mountain and have the determination and appetite for learning so that they will continue to climb higher and higher throughout their life of learning.
